WE are delighted that the new Lib Dem Leader is so supportive of the new powers to curb the bad behaviour of unruly individuals by Anti- Social Behaviour Orders.
The question is why did the National Lib Dem party oppose the introduction of these Orders by voting against them in Parliament? Are the local Lib Dems defying their party line?
Local communities were desperate for sanctions against individuals determined to disrupt and cause mayhem. The Labour Party were pleased to introduce ASBOs and lead the way in Bolton. We felt it was correct to encourage the use of these Orders with our partner agencies. The powers are now there to be enforced and we wish to thank all those members of the public who have had the courage to speak out despite the possible threat of reprisals.
Labour will continue to press for strong action against disruptive members of our society and hope that the other parties will be equally supportive. The worry is that there is contempt for the use of ASBOs by the National Lib Dem leadership. This accompanied by recent suggestions from their conference, reiterated by the new Lib Dem Deputy Leader of the Council, that as a punishment joy riders and car thieves be sent on car maintenance courses, could see a watering down of these firm new powers locally. This would be regrettable.
