HOLCOMBE Brook SC A clinched the Men's Premier Division title with a final day victory over closest challengers South College A.

Holcombe's top pairing of Andrew Davies and Simon Roberts laid the foundations for victory by winning all three of their games.

The South College team all scored and put up a magnificent assault. But when two of their couples lost to Brook pair, Eric Knowles and Neil Gibson, their fate was sealed and they went down 5-4.

Walmer A failed to complete against Leigh CC A, but the one point given for abandoned fixtures proved decisive and they ran out Division Two winners over South College B, who finished one point behind.

Division Three was already decided and Next Generation (Chorley) A completed their season, not only undefeated, but with the best record in Men's tennis this year.

This remarkable team have yielded only 19.5 sets in 14 matches, and can be expected to make a big impression in Division Two next season.

Markland Hill B take second spot as Claremont's challenge fell away when they could not complete their fixture against Elton Vale A.

Division Four went down to a last gasp finish as neighbours Tyldesley B and Ellesmere B played their final matches. In the event the Ellesmere courts proved unsuitable for play and the home team had to watch while Tyldesley B won theirs and took the title by a single point.

Winning Division Five by a country mile are David Lloyd (Bolton) A and runners-up Chorley A, who had reached this position almost three weeks out from the season end.

After a season-long scrap the only way to split the leaders of Division Six is on sets difference and Lostock C just take the honours over Bradshaw B.

Harwood CC A could not complete their match against Bradshaw B and were forced to accept third place after being in there right up to the last match.

Next Generation (Choly) B comfortably topped out Division Seven and matched their A team by completing the season unbeaten. Lostock D had a more difficult time and played in the rain against a sporting Elton Vale B who lost and the win allows the Lostock lads to make second spot.

In spite on not finishing their matches the top two Division 8 teams managed to hang onto their leads and David Lloyd (Bolton) B lead Ellesmere C into Division Seven tennis next season.

After putting up a splendid scrap for the division nine honours David Lloyd (Bolton) C were forced to concede that Chorley B were tops.

Again the rain interfered with the David Lloyd (Bolton) match but as Chorley B managed to finish against the David Lloyd (Bolton) D team in a sporting encounter this made all the difference.
