FOOTBALL'S rulers have made the best referees professional. Maybe they should bestow the same privilege on the best fans.

It's becoming so expensive for the most loyal supporters to follow their clubs these days that being paid for their services will soon be the only way they can afford to do it.

We all know about the crazy prices charged by London clubs to watch a game. But now the madness is spreading.

Birmingham City, in the First Division up to a couple of years ago, now charge visiting supporters £40 for the privilege of sitting behind a goal.

With rising gas prices pushing up the cost of petrol and matchday programmes and flat beer costing £2.50, it's a wonder how anybody can afford to go.

Working class sport? I don't think so.
