THERE was a close finish in the First President's Cup at Turton with a card play-off for the leading three players.

The weather was ideal for good scoring in the first round with soft, true, medium paced greens and accessible pin placements resulting in 37 players being under par.

Ian Wilbur led with 62, despite an out-of-bounds which was to prove critical at the end, with Andrew Pollitt also on this total.

The president, John Powell, had found some tricky pin positions for the second round which ensured that the scoring would not be as low.

Many of the players who had returned good scores in the first round found they were unable to repeat their achievements.

Seventeen handicapper Paul Gandy, after a 66 in the first round, played the first eight holes in level par gross before disaster overtook him.

Jonathan Duxbury also came to grief when he played an iron for safety from the 18th tee only to put the ball out of bounds which cost him the trophy.

In the end it was long standing member David Stuart with the best round of the day of 66 who came through to triumph from Ken Williams with Ian Wilbur third.

Bolton-Le-Moors Rotary Club won the Rotary District Final at Bolton Golf Club, beating the Bolton Rotary Club.
