A CAMPAIGNER is hammering home the message of safety on the roads after a teenager was killed in Farnworth.

Allan Ramsay, who nearly died in a road accident in 1991, has spoken out of the dangers on Bolton area roads after 13-year-old Carla Bate was hit by a sports car at the junction of Longcauseway and Albert Road earlier this month.

Mr Ramsay, of Ashcombe Drive, Radcliffe, wants more people to sign up to national charity RoadPeace to help reduce casualties.

And he has enlisted the support of Farnworth nightclub owner Clare Topcu, who has agreed to become an associate member of the organisation. The Market Street nightspot is holding a tribute night to teenager Carla on Thursday.

Posters from RoadPeace will be put up on the night and leaflets will be available.

Clare said: "It's a worthy cause that encourages drivers to slow down and makes them aware of the potential dangers of being behind the wheel."

The funeral of Carla Bate took place yesterday with the cortege leaving her home in Primrose Avenue for a service and commital ceremony at Overdale.

Mr Ramsay became active with RoadPeace after he survived a horrific accident after being struck by a metal rod protruding from a passing lorry. The keen cyclist, who had just finished a road race and was standing talking to his son in a layby, suffered a fractured skull and damaged nerves.

The campaigner is also hoping to approach Harper Green School, where Carla was a pupil, about joining RoadPeace.

Voluntary groups pay a fee of £20 to join RoadPeace, while businesses or schools are charged £50.

Mr Ramsay said: "Children are being killed and families are being forced to serve a life sentence because of these deaths."

Entry for the tribute to Carla Bate at Club Rac in Market Street is £4 and £2 for children. Anyone under the age of 18 must leave the club by 10.30pm.
