STUDENT Shabnam Begum's work will live on when one of her designs is turned into a trophy to represent Bolton's Spirit of Sport.

Artist Shabnam, aged 23, won £1,000 to turn her futuristic video work into a trophy which will be presented annually in Bolton.

The Bolton Institute student was one of several who entered the competition to capture artistically the essence of sport in the town, as part of the council's Spirit of Sport public art project.

Schools and community groups have spent several months working on their own interpretations of Spirit of Sport and the council-run project will culminate in a £180,000 piece of public art to be placed at the Middlebrook roundabout.

Five artists have been short-listed from more than 90 for the sculpture commission and they were at the Eagle Mall gallery at the Institute to judge degree work by the students.

They were unanimous about the winner after seeing Shabnam's video installation, which was inspired by dance and the physical grace of the athlete.

Shabnam, of Blackburn Road, Bolton, who has another year of her degree left, hopes to become a teacher.

She was thrilled when the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Prentice Howarth, announced her name to the crowd at the gallery.

She said: "I am stunned. It is the first time I have worked with video. I will now have a lot of work to do over the holidays to come up with a design."

She will work with the artists to turn her ideas of the Spirit of Sport into a trophy which will be presented by the council to the best sportsperson. The gallery is also exhibiting work from schoolchildren and community groups and it is hoped their work will help to inspire the five short-listed artists.

The exhibition is open to the public until August 18.
