RESIDENTS living near major roadworks in Farnworth are being warned to beware of doorstep traders claiming to be workmen from the council.

A number of residents on Bolton Road have been approached by traders claiming to be from Bolton Council or its contractors Kennedy Asphalt during repairs on the road in recent weeks.

The workmen have claimed they have spare materials which they will use to carry out cheap work to gardens and drives. Cllr Roger Hayes, Executive Member for Direct Services, explained: "It has come to our attention that during the works on Bolton Road a number of residents were approached by traders saying they had spare time or materials and were willing to carry out cheap work to gardens or drives.

"The gang left incomplete or poor quality work despite taking money from people.

"Residents should be aware that these men are nothing to do with Bolton Council or Kennedy Asphalt. They should not buy from doorstep tradesmen unless they are certain they are who they claim to be."

Motorists in the area will face delays as work to replace drains and resurface roads continues.

Roadworks on Bolton Road are set to be extended along Market Street from Gladstone Road to the King Street junction.

The work includes resurfacing Market Street and replacing all the highway drainage, with improvements to pavements.

The new phase of the work, which starts next week, is set to last for around two months.

The longest delays can be expected towards the end of the scheme when temporary traffic lights will be in operation for a two week period during resurfacing work.

These traffic signals are necessary to ensure the safety of road users and the workers on site.

Bolton Council is asking motorists to be patient and apologises in advance for any delays.
