MOTORISTS heading to Wigan have been enjoying a more scenic approach to the town following the opening of a series of public art installations at the Marus Bridge roundabout.

Thanks to European funds, visitors are now greeted with a number of metal screens depicting emblems of Wigan's success, nestled amongst new trees, shrubs and flowers.

The installation, which was developed by Wigan Council's Planning and Regeneration Department and The Environment Partnership, in conjunction with the local community, features scenes ranging from wildlife and the town's industrial heritage through to "Northern Soul" at the Wigan Casino and the borough's annual jazz festival.

Several of the designs were contributed by pupils from nearby schools Marus Bridge Primary and Hawkley Hall High.

The council have now set their sights on the Landgate Roundabout as their next public art target.
