CAMPAIGNERS fighting to stop Horwich's Red Moss beauty spot from becoming a massive supertip for Greater Manchester have lost the first round of their battle.

Planning officers confirmed the area, designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest by English Nature, has been earmarked for tipping in a government inspector's report on Bolton Council's planning blueprint for the next 10 years -- the Unitary Development Plan.

Cllr Barbara Ronson said: "Bolton Council recently launched an Environmental Forum to show how 'green' they are and if they have any conscience they will drop the plan."

THE first draw in the new National Lottery will be made on Saturday, November 19, organisers said today.

Numbers will be revealed on a live primetime television show which will almost certainly be broadcast on BBC1. It is expected that a jackpot prize of around £1 million will be on offer.

BOLTON Cleansing Committee's foremost ambition is to change the popular habit of strewing streets with bus tickets and other litter.

Provision of street litter bins is, however, much less than half the battle if people do not co-operate, Cllr Stanley Hawksworth told members who went on the Committee's annual inspection yesterday.

He said the "litter lout" had in some places been eliminated, notably in Edinburgh. Would Bolton one day be added to the select list of litter-conscious towns?

ALD A. Booth, chairman of Bolton Allotments Committee, told members at the annual inspection yesterday that the total number of plots they controlled amounted to 1,253 on 39 different sites.

"When negotiations are complete we shall have over 900 permanent plots in the town -- more than ever since the war," he said.
