UP to 1,000 fish found dead at Bury's Clarence Lido could have been casualties of oxygen level problems caused by the variable weather.
Officers from the Environment Agency and Bury Council are continuing their investigations to pinpoint why the roach and bream perished. The area was closed off on Sunday (July 25) and remained closed on Monday after reports were received about the dead fish.
A team of officers from Bury Council's leisure, environmental and emergency planning sections was called out, along with the Environmental Agency (EA).
The EA has installed two aeration units in the pond and staff returned to the site to monitor the situation.
Initial estimates were that about 300 fish had died but the figure is likely to be higher, possibly up to 1,000.
Council officers and members of a local angling club have been removing the dead fish.
A spokesman for the local authority said: "It is believed that problems with oxygen levels in the water caused by the unusually variable weather conditions has led to the death of roach and bream within the lake at Mosley Avenue."
