MORE than 90,000 motorway drivers in Greater Manchester face delays as major construction work gets underway to widen the M60 in order to improve safety and cut congestion.

It is the second phase of a £102m project and will mean a new, temporary road layout to allow contractors to carry out the work between junctions five and eight in the Sale area.

Three narrow lanes will be introduced as well as a 40 mph speed limit which will be enforced with speed cameras.

Roadside phones and warning signs and signals have been switched off and this communications shutdown is expected to last more than two years.

A CCTV system will still cover the section and six temporary message signs will also be deployed.

The Highways Agency say a wider carriageway is needed because that section of the Manchester ring road is a notorious bottleneck.

The aim is to cut congestion for the 90,000 drivers who use the motorway every day.
