BOLTON Under 15s just missed out on lifting the Lombardy Cup after going down 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out against Valdossola Caleio at the Como Stadium in Italy.

It was a disappointing end for Bolton, who had gone through the tournament without conceding a goal up until that shoot-out.

Having won the cup last season, Bolton got their defence off to a great start by beating FC Lanzo 6-0.

Chris McCaughtry (Mount St Joseph's) scored a hat-trick, with Thomas Aspin (Thornleigh), James Winteringham (Rivington) and Paul Williams (Sharples) grabbing one each.

Another Winteringham goal and one from Daniel Lafferty (Mount St. Joseph's) helped Bolton to a 2-0 win against Bellinzago. Winteringham's third goal of the tournament secured a third win, 1-0 over Olgiatese FC.

Bolton qualified for the last four by finishing top of their group.

But they needed some inspired goalkeeping from Steven Collins (Mount St Joseph's) to keep them in the game against US Varzese.

The U15s went through to the final 3-0 on penalties after a goalless draw.

The final against Valdossola also finished goalless, but Bolton came off second best in the shoot-out.
