PRIMARY school pupils in Bolton are being encouraged to take part in a competition designed to protect them against skin cancer.

The children are being asked to design sunhats with vital messages on them as part of Cancer Research UK's SunSmart campaign. The prize is a sun canopy for their school.

SunSmart co-ordinator Di Swanston said: "The design can be colourful and wacky, but must follow the SunSmart code.

"While the competition is fun, there is a serious message. We want children to realise that the sun can be harmful and to be aware of the simple steps they can take to protect themselves."

Teachers will receive the competition details and accompanying worksheet over the next week.
