WHEN the council introduced their recycling measures recently, I thought it was a great initiative.

So, for the last three months, I have filled my green bin with all conceivable plastics and, after a bit of nagging, even the kids have become fully-fledged recyclers!

From yoghurt pots to bottle tops, they have taken great pride in carefully depositing their plastic containers in the special bin every week.

Imagine my dismay when, this week, I found my green bin still overflowing, despite a visit from the binmen. And on my green bin was a sticker telling me we had deposited the wrong type of plastic!

This is despite the fact that they have taken exactly the same sort of plastic away in past weeks without complaint.

When I contacted the council waste department, I was told that only empty, well-squashed, pop bottles, fabric bottles and the like would be collected.

They said that any plastic used for food would not be needed, because of contamination. Unfortunately, that accounts for 90 per cent of my plastics!

The only assurance I received was that perhaps in the future, Bolton Council would start to recycle all plastics.

Meanwhile, however, plastic is having to go in my normal black refuse bin, a total waste in an age where we are running out of space.

Definitely a case of two steps forward, one step back!
