IN August, 1975, around 600 pupils from Smithills High School took part in the annual two-and-a-half mile charity walk from the school, up Smithills Deane Road and through Smithills Hall.
They were hoping to raise more than the £150 collected the previous year. Organiser Mrs Irene Hall, a religious education instructor, said: "Each form has its morning or afternoon to walk the course. We encourage pupils to get around as many times as they can. Last year some covered it six times." The picture shows some of the pupils pausing at a checkpoint along the route.
