A BOLTON motoring organisation has slammed a new European law which will force children as old as 11 to use a booster seat when they travel in a car.
Under an amendment to seatbelt legislation by the European Commission, all children less than 4ft 11in tall and weighing less than 5st 9lb would have to use one of five types of child seats. Hugh German, of Bolton Advanced Motorists, has labelled the legislation, which is due to become law in two years, as "complicated and unworkable".
Mr German believes that the law change would be difficult to enforce and would create problems for parents.
The vice-chairman said: "This is just EU bureaucracy gone mad. Who is going to enforce this new law? We all know about the law banning motorists using mobile phones while they are driving. I welcome anything that will make our roads safer but I think that this legislation will cause more harm than good."
