YOUNG all-rounder Nick Woods made an impressive debut for Chorley in their comfortable victory over Atherton in a pre-season friendly on Sunday.

Batting first in a 40 over contest, Chorley posted a formidable195/8 with the major contribution coming from Woods.

The youngster, who is a highly regarded talent at Old Trafford where he has already appeared in a couple of second team games, hammered a sumptous 90 off just 100 deliveries.

He was clearly annoyed with himself when he drilled a catch to cover as a 'ton' was there for the taking. Good support came from Ian Oakes with a blistering 34 and Michael Critchley with 25.

Atherton never remotely threatened with the Smith brothers, Tom and Billy, picking up three early wickets before the total reached double figures.

Former Chorley batsman Neil Bannister was then comically run out and, despite a defiant 29 from Walsh, Atherton subsided to 74 all out.

Chorley's first league fixture is on Saturday when Preston visit Windsor Park. The match starts at 1pm.
