CLOSURE-threatened Chorley Adventure Youth Club -- launched more than 30 years ago -- is to continue.

The club had made the decision to close this summer because of long-standing leadership problems.

But its founder member and current leader Paul Glucklich this week said he could not bring the axe down on the club which he feels has a 'social responsibility' to carry on.

And at a special meeting of club trustees he outlined the options available if it was to close in July.

Paul, 46, of Birch Close, Chorley, said: "After speaking to quite a few people over the last few months it became seriously obvious that, were the club to close down, there would be a huge loss of opportunity for young people in the town to take part in outdoor activities.

"As far as we could ascertain, no other organisation offered the same wide range of regular activities that was on offer to our members."

Paul, who's been leader for thirty three years, added: "I just wanted to step back and let someone else take over, unfortunately we just couldn't find anybody.

"We gave it to July then the club would close and we have been working to that, but it just became apparent that there was nothing else in town for members to do."

The small, friendly club was formed in 1972 offering a varied programme of sporting and social activities planned by the club leaders and members together for 10-15-year-old boys and girls in Chorley.

Now the club will train up existing members, with Paul, who runs his own print and design business, continuing in his role, until a new team had been put together.
