BUSINESSES in Bolton are being urged to enter a scheme which recognises employers who encourage disabled people in the workplace.

The Remploy Leading the Way awards aim to acknowledge companies' equal opportunity policies, and also recognises that they are meeting Government targets, legal requirements and social obligations.

A judging panel assesses each nominated entrant on a number of criteria including recruitment, training, access, support and the opportunities made available to disabled employees.

Winners will benefit from being able to present a positive image to new and existing customers.

Remploy chairman Alan Pedder said: "They embrace the Government's agenda to promote equal rights for disabled people in society through employment.

"Those that enter, show all employers the way forward - they prove that opening career opportunities to disabled people is easy and cost effective, and it benefits the whole organisation." The grand final is planned for October.
