TOAST is the favourite breakfast for people from Bolton, according to a new study.

It heads a top ten food list beating milk and cereal firmly into second place.

A total of 33 per cent of people living in the borough reach for the loaf just moments after they wake up. In comparison, 24 per cent have cereal and 12 per cent go for a full English breakfast.

It seems Bolton - which has recently begun to wake up to continental-style coffee houses - has still not embraced the French favourite, with only two per cent eating a croissant. Along with the full English breakfast, other waist-busting foods eaten first thing include a bacon sandwich, and chocolate and crisps.

Nationally, figures show there are three million low-carb dieters in Britain and 22 per cent of these fail because they miss bread so much. Some of the more strange favourite breakfasts revealed in the research by Nimble food manufacturers included pork chops, last night's Chinese, coffee and cigarettes.

Marie Davies, of Nimble, said: "Our research shows just how much people in Bolton love bread."
