SMOKERS who want to kick the habit are being encouraged to quit on National No Smoking Day today.
Staff from Fresh Focus, Bolton's Smoking Cessation Team, are pictured on the steps of Bolton Town Hall to reinforce the message. They held up the telephone number - 01204 360008 - that would-be quitters should ring, to get advice and help on giving up smoking.
Bolton's oldest town centre pub, Ye Olde Man and Scythe, was leading the way by banning smoking for a day.
The pub was putting up notices telling people to stay away if they intend to smoke.
No Smoking Day is in its 21st year, and has helped 1.25 million people quit smoking since 1983.
Ben Youdan, the campaign director, said: "An increasing number of public places and venues are becoming smoke-free."
