THE troubled Deane School in Bolton will reopen in September - with both a new name and a new uniform.

The school was put into special measures when Ofsted inspectors found it was failing to provide an acceptable standard of education.

It was decided to completely revamp the school and its educational ethos.

It will formally close in the summer and be reopened at the same premises in September.

It has already been announced that it is to be called Ladybridge High School.

Now it has been revealed that a new red-and-black school uniform will be introduced which has been partly designed by the pupils. And all staff at the Deane have had to re-apply for their jobs at the new school.

The current Deane headteacher, Tony Hill, will leave when the new school opens as he declined to re-apply for his job.

Rivington and Blackrod headteacher John Baumber will be the "executive principal" of the new school, which will be run in collaboration with his Rivington school.

He said the sites will continue to operate as two separate schools.

As part of a drive to raise educational standards at the former Deane school, learning co-ordinators will be appointed to help pupils in areas where they have difficulties.

Over the next three years, £1 million will be pumped into the school to revamp the computer facilities and other changes. A dance studio will also be built.

Pupils will not only be able to study for traditional GCSE subjects, but also a range of vocational options and there will be work-based learning opportunities in engineering and hospitality.

Measures will also be taken to increase adult education opportunities at the school.

Administrative tasks will be taken on by support staff so teachers can concentrate on teaching and a pupil researcher will be appointed to monitor progress.

Margaret Blenkinsop, director of education and culture, said the partnership between the Rivington and Blackrod School and the new Ladybridge High School was one of the first of its kind in the country.

Jo Gabler, current deputy headteacher of George Tomlinson High School in Kearsley, will be the vice-principal at Ladybridge, while Tony Purcell will be the vice-principal of Rivington and Blackrod.

Mr Baumber said the partnership will not take resources away from Rivington and Blackrod.

He said he had been taken aback by the amount of goodwill for the new school.

He added: "I have been heartened by all the people in the community who want to work and make this happen."
