A WAR has been declared on litter louts who have been dumping rubbish on a street in Great Lever.

Residents of Nixon Road have vowed to sweep away the rubbish from their area and spent their Saturday morning filling up a skip with garbage.

A dozen children and four adults spent 90 minutes filling the skip, which was provided by Bolton Council.

Items as diverse as washing machines, carpets and beds through to everyday household waste such as bottles and crisp packets were cleared away.

It comes as the Bolton Evening News enters the second week of the already successful Bin It For Bolton campaign. The newspaper has teamed up with Bolton Council and town centre businessman Andrew Dickson to clean up the borough's streets.

The latest litter pick was organised by members of the Nixon Triangle Residents Association, who were determined to tackle the growing problem of rubbish on their street.

Neil Zeller, secretary of the residents' association, said the litter problem had grown worse during the last two years.

He said last year a taxi driver had parked on the street and dumped rubbish, and people were constantly fly tipping on waste ground near their homes.

But Mr Zeller added that all residents were united in the fight to clean up their street.

He said: "In the last two years the rubbish problem has gone beyond a joke. There is nowhere for the kids to go because the rubbish does not make it safe for them to play.

"There is not a week that goes by without somebody fly tipping on our street. People just do not have pride for their town any more. We are educating our children not to drop litter but we find it is older people who are the worse offenders."

The association also filled the skip with weeds as they worked on clearing a green space at the bottom of their steet which they plan to turn into a park for residents.

The park has been fenced off by the council and the association plans to plant some flowers.
