A UNIVERSITY professor will be responsible for research into mental health in the area.

Professor Karen Luker, Dean of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting at The University of Manchester, has been appointed as a non-executive director of the Bolton, Salford and Trafford Mental Health NHS Trust. She will now sit on the board of the trust for the next four years.

Professor Luker is responsible for 4,000 students and 160 staff at the university.

Her appointment completes the board, which has been formed for less than a year. She will receive a remuneration of £5,426 per annum.

Julia Chapman-Barker, chairman of the trust, said: "I am delighted to welcome Professor Luker to the Trust. As we are an organisation with a substantial research and teaching responsibility, she will be a great asset with her skills and experience. I look forward to working closely with her over the coming years."

Her appointment completes the board, which has been formed for less than a year.

She will receive a remuneration of £5,426 per annum. She has declared no political activity in the past five years and holds no ministerial appointments.
