From the Evening News, March 9, 1904: AFTER sitting up till two o'clock in the morning poring over trashy literature, a young man from the neighbourhood of Chorley died in the county asylum.

Referring to the case at a meeting of the Chorley Guardians on Tuesday, a member said the Penny Dreadful books "teemed with pictures of murders by dagger and poison, scenes on the gallows and so forth." It was a pity that such wretched, trashy, horrible publications could not be stopped.

LORD and Lady Ellesmere are expected shortly at Worsley Hall, their seat near Manchester, for a stay of several weeks. They will receive a visit from Lord and Lady Normanby, who have been residing since their marriage at Mulgrave Castle, the family place near Whitby. Extensive alternations and improvements have been carried out at Worsley during the last year.

From the Evening News, March 9, 1954: BRITISH Railways' London Midland Region has announced that regular passenger train services between Bolton (Great Moor Street) and Manchester Exchange stations and between Great Moor Street and Kenyon Junction will be withdrawn from Monday, March 29. This means that the last regular trains from the station will run on Saturday, March 27 as there is no Sunday service. British Railways said there had been "no appreciable response" to the cheap travel facilities introduced and so there was no alternative but to end the services.

LORD Derby is to perform the official opening ceremony for the new Turton County Secondary School in Chapeltown Road on Tuesday, March 30. Pupils have been attending for a few months.

From the Evening News, March 9, 1979: BOLTON is to have a youth advisory service in an attempt to cut down the number of unwanted pregnancies among teenagers. The town centre service, run by the Area Health Authority, will help in a variety of young people's problems, including family planning. At first, it will be held on one night a week at the Deansgate Health Centre - but it could be extended later if it is found there is a need.

AUTOMOTIVE Products is to build a new factory to replace the Bolton works wrecked by fire last month.

Negotiations are under way for the purchase of part of a 30-acre, council-owned site in Lostock Lane, Lostock, near the British Aerospace works.

From the Evening News, March 9, 1994: PHANTOM of the Opera star Dave Willetts was rushed to hospital after plunging 20 ft during last night's performance of the hit musical at Manchester Opera House. Willetts, who plays the lead role, was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary after falling from scenery halfway through the second half of the show. But he was allowed home after treatment for minor injuries.

A NEW teenage craze is crawling across Britian, pet suppliers said today. More and more teenage girls are buying tarantulas as pets, said the Pet City store chain. Through its 15 stores in England, it sold over 200 tarantulas last year - mostly to teenage girls.
