PETER Sloan and the Bolton Volunteer Bureau do excellent work in our local community, but there really is no need for them to volunteer to man our police stations!
The situation is that the existing police stations in Horwich and Westhoughton are due to close to be replaced by police posts - essentially shops which will carry out the same functions as the current front desks at the stations.
The opening hours will remain the same. Extra police officers have been recruited and we in the west of the borough are due to get an extra police station based at Middlebrook.
In other words, the service from the police should get better as a result of the changes.
The scare stories about the closure of the existing stations are part of a Conservative Party campaign to undermine our local police force and frighten vulnerable people.
Unfortunately for them, the facts spoil their argument.
