BOLTON Council has been nominated for a top award by the political magazine New Statesman.

The nomination, in the Modernising Government category in the magazine's New Media Awards, is for the recently launched Access Bolton initiative which incorporates the One Stop Shop, Contact Centre and Internet Kiosks projects.

Since 1999 the New Media Awards have promoted projects that embrace new technology, fresh thinking and creative management in the UK.

"We hear a great deal about how the Internet and such like will improve our lives," said Peter Wilby, editor of New Statesman. "This project aims to look at how far the digital revolution has really brought us."

Journalist Tom Armitage, who nominated Bolton for the award, described the Access Bolton initiative as "a most interesting use of new technology".

The One Stop Shop and Contact Centre enable the public to have queries dealt with in a single visit or phone call using state-of-the-art facilities.

The kiosks project, in a partnership with BT, has seen 40 telephone boxes in the borough converted to Internet kiosks, which allow free access to 11 public service websites including the council's own.
