RESIDENTS of an Astley Bridge housing estate will be taking litter matters into their own hands this weekend.
Children and adults on the Oldhams estate will be taking up litter-picking sticks and will be assigned a street each to keep rubbish free.
There will also be a number of skips dotted around the estate for the day for residents to deposit bulkier waste and reduce the temptation to fly-tip.
Members of the residents' association will also be touring the estate collecting waste left outside homes by people who cannot get to the skips themselves.
The team of litter pickers will meet outside Athlone Avenue Newsagents today, returning to the shop at the end of the day with their bin-bags of waste.
There will also be a refuse collection to empty bins on the estate as they become full through the day.
Children involved in the effort were rewarded with chocolate and sweets.
The clean-up is held twice a year by the Hoodlums Residents' Association, with funding for skip hire from Local Community Planning funds.
