PRIMARY school children in Heaton told the nation what life is like to be a 10-year-old.

Year Five students from Devonshire Road Primary School spoke on BBC Radio Five Live about their fears and aspirations to six million listeners on Simon Mayo's show lunchtime show.

The pupils spoke for a minute to outline their concerns about green issues including Brazilian rainforests and animals becoming extinct. They were also concerned about the dangers of strangers and gangs of anti-social youths.

The broadcast, called The Five Live Generation, is part of the station's 10-year anniversary as it attempted to contact as many ten-year-olds about their life in the UK as possible.

Teacher Steve Linahan said: "The pupils are very good at talking about their thoughts and feelings and they were able to express these live on air. They were over the moon to be involved on Simon Mayo's show."

The school contacted the radio station and each of the Year Five pupils had written a one-minute soundbite about their life as a ten-year-old - with the best five reading their thoughts live on air.
