TWO Farnworth brothers are making their mark in top-level hockey after winning national call-ups.

Peter Flanagan is heading for the European Championships this summer, having been selected for the England under-21 squad.

His younger brother David is impressing in two sports; not only is he establishing himself as a member of the UK Lions under-13 hockey squad, but he has also played for Lancashire under-12s at cricket, and is currently training with the North of England side.

Peter will get his first taste of England under-21 action in June, as the team prepare for the European Championships in Belgium the following month.

National selection is the latest in a long line of sporting achievements for the 21-year-old University of Manchester student.

He started out at Bolton Hockey Club, but three years ago moved on to Cheshire side Brooklands, who play in the England Hockey League Division Two.

His progress is being helped by the University of Manchester's Excellence in Sport programme. The scheme was set up to enable students to combine academic study with top-level sport.

David, aged 12, a pupil at St James's CE Secondary School, Farnworth, is a regular in the Bolton Badgers junior hockey team, and also plays for Lancashire and the North-west at various age levels.
