FRIENDS have said a big thank-you to the man responsible for the smooth running of Chorley Walking Day for the past 30 years.

Derek Beaumont was honoured with a presentation at a ceremony in St Laurence's Church following his retirement as chief marshall of the special day. Mr Beaumont had been the chief organiser of the annual event.

He said: "I've just decided that I would retire to give someone else a chance to do the job."

Mr Beaumont, married to Margaret, 67, of Letchworth Drive, Chorley, added: "The nicest part of walking day is to see hundreds of people altogether in the town centre -- you see those little tots walking along thoroughly enjoying themselves."

Walking Day is an ecumenical event attended by the leaders of the major churches of Lancashire, the MP and the Mayor of Chorley.

It takes place on the last Saturday of June and is the largest street event to take place in Chorley.
