PEOPLE in Bolton want business fat cats taxed instead of being hit by stealth taxes themselves.

A survey by chartered accountants Jackson Stephen, in advance of the Budget, showed that Bolton people want a reduction in council tax, or a council tax based on services used and not on the value of the house. This was followed by a reduction in income tax and stamp duty plus a higher tax on industry "fat cats".

Other suggestions were a tax on unhealthy, fatty and convenience foods; the legalisation of cannabis so that it can be taxed and a pay-as-you-go system on motorways.

Diane Brennan, managing partner of Jackson Stephen, said: "The Government needs to raise revenue and likes to do this in the name of promoting health, ecology and other worthy causes. There has already been speculation about a VAT on fat with higher rates on fast food, so the citizens of Bolton may just get their wish."
