BOLTON comedian Peter Kay getting his message across to Sixties singer Engelbert Humperdinck in the latest of his hilarious series of TV commercials.

As exclusively revealed in the Bolton Evening News last September, Peter has teamed up with Englebert for a new John Smith's beer advert.

Called Show Stopper, it will be screened on Sky for the first time on Sunday, February 1, and is likely to achieve the cult status of previous ads which saw "'Ave it" and "Top bombing" become household phrases.

The 50-second commercial opens with Englebert singing his classic hit song "Please release me, let me go" to an adoring audience.

The camera cuts from shots of the bright neon lights of Vegas to close-ups of the singer in full flow, accompanied by diamante-gowned backing singers and a full orchestra. The audience sways rhythmically as the song reaches its climax.

And at this point, Peter is seen returning to the hushed auditorium with a tray of drinks for his family.

As Engelbert pauses momentarily, preparing to deliver his final "Let me go" with a big finish, Peter interrupts the silence in his no-nonsense way with a cry of "Go!".

Engelbert is stunned into silence, the orchestra halts and Peter's family and friends are shown hanging their heads in disbelief. Completely oblivious to their embarrassment, Peter walks back to his seat telling Engelbert "Carry On!"

Peter is delighted with the new John Smith's advert. He said: "The ad is cracking with a very funny script which gives me the chance to simply play myself. All in all, it's a dream job."

Munnawar Chishty, marketing manager for John Smith's, said: "Peter and Engelbert sound like an unlikely double act, but their pairing allows us to take the no-nonsense character out of his home environment and show that he'll always be true to himself wherever he goes."

"We are confident that Show Stopper, like earlier John Smith's ads, will become must-see TV in 2004."

The commerical will be shown on ITV and satellite channels throughout the month.
