TYPICAL North-west holidaymakers will spend £247 above their budgets, according to new research.

But the survey by First Direct suggests that they are far from alone in their overspending.

Overall, more than 11 million British holidaymakers are likely to spend more than their budget this year to the tune of £3 billion.

The research claims 24 per cent of the British adult population will overspend on holiday this year, with men more likely to overspend than women, 27pc versus 22pc. Younger holidaymakers are much more likely to overspend than older people, with16-24 year-olds (41pc) and 25-34 year-olds (36pc) topping the scales.

Difficulty equating foreign currency to sterling when abroad is an issue for 16 per cent of the adult population.

Women are more likely than men to miscalculate converting sterling into foreign currency (18 per cent and 14 per cent respectively).

Fourteen per cent of the population are unable to keep track of money leaving their account while on holiday, with men slightly more likely than women to lose track of their daily expenditure.
