DOZENS of Bolton teenagers have been enjoying a different type of exercise this summer -- military exercise.

A group of 37 army cadets took part in a full-blown mock operation complete with blank ammunition, smoke and thunderflash bangs.

The exercise was part of a series of challenges as they joined more than 350 other cadets from Greater Manchester for a two-week summer camp in Crowborough, Sussex.

The cadets were also put through their paces in foot-drill, target shooting and camouflage.

And on a less military but equally adventurous note, tutors led them through activities including canoeing, raft-building, orienteering, mountain-biking, rock-climbing and abseiling.

Cadets also learned how to set up camp and sleep outdoors in a "basha" improvised shelter.

Organisers said the camp was designed to be "challenging yet fun" and promote self-confidence and self-reliance in those taking part.

Among the Bolton cadets was Nathan Black, aged 15, from Bromley Cross, whose father, Stuart, served with the 17th-21st Lancers.

The Turton High School pupil said: "The exercise was the highlight for me. It was really good. I've always wanted to join the army since I was small and I'd love to go on one of these camps again.

"I was meant to be going on camp at Christmas but it was cancelled because of the firefighters' strike so I was pleased to go this time."

But the fortnight was not all hard work for the 37 Bolton boys and girls, they also enjoyed a series of social events including a day-trip to Brighton and a disco and karaoke evening.

Cadet membership is open to boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18. Bolton Cadets meet at the Territorial Army centre in Nelson Street on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
