THE number of entries for Bolton's first Race for Life has smashed targets set by organisers.

Organisers of the race had set a target of 800 entries for the three mile long race.

But although the women-only race at Leverhulme Park -- which is in aid of Cancer Research UK -- will not be held until Sunday, June 22, a total of 896 woman of all ages have signed up.

Numbers are now expected to top 1,000 for the race which is being supported by the Bolton Evening News.

Bolton organiser David Martin said: "We set a target of 800 entries and we have already exceeded that, we may cap the race at 1,500. It will be fantastic, it's going brilliantly."

Cancer Research UK's Race for Life, sponsored by Tesco, is a series of five kilometre events across the UK, where women walk or run together to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Mr Martin said: "All ages have entered. Women in their 90s can run right down to small children who are accompanying their mums. Race for Life is for everyone."

Celebrities such as Cold Feet star Hermione Norris, sports star Sally Gunnell, breakfast show host Lorraine Kelly and pop duo the Cheeky Girls have all pledged their support.

The focus is not on competing but for individuals to take part at their own pace and many women even wear fancy dress.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Race for Life and 130 races are taking place throughout the UK between May and July.

Anyone wishing to enter must register at least a week beforehand. It is £7.50 to enter for women and £4.50 for girls under the age of 18.
