Wanderers' latest signing Mario Jardel made it clear where his loyalties lie when he dashed back to Lisbon on Thursday.

The Brazilian goal star -- Portugal's answer to David Beckham -- was pursued by a media posse as he sped through the heart of the capital where he was worshipped as a hero after his goals helped Sporting to their 2002 Championship success.

Suddenly, with his car stopped at traffic lights, he jumped out, produced a Bolton Wanderers' shirt displaying "JARDEL 13" on the back and waved it provocatively at the snapping photographers.

Jardel, twice winner of the Golden Boot award as Europe's top goalscorer, was on a flying visit to Lisbon to collect the documents relating to his dual citizenship - Brazilian and Portuguese - which allow him to play in the Premiership without a work permit.

The 29-year-old marksman, nicknamed Super Mario, boasts a goal-a-game scoring record, which once made him one of the hottest properties in European football.

He cost the Turkish club Galatasaray a record £16.5 million when he was transferred from Porto three years ago but Wanderers have snapped him up for a knockdown fee after a year of highly-publicised problems on the professional and personal front.
