NORTH-west builders are to be targeted in a new recruitment drive by a Government-backed scheme.

Quality Mark is intended to encourage small firms working in the home improvement market to join its national register of approved builders. The scheme aims to protect consumers and promote reliable and professional workers in the home improvement trade.

Quality Mark firms are assessed for workmanship skills, proper insurance cover, management practices and in financial matters by independent certification bodies which are licensed by the Department of Trade and Industry.

Contractors under the Quality Mark scheme follow a code of practice governing relations with their customers.

The move comes after an increase in complaints over the last few years, resulting in TV programmes such as Rogue Traders and Builders From Hell.

As a result, people have been increasingly reluctant to hire smaller companies as they do not know who to trust.
