PLANS are taking off for this year's Southport Air Show with the announcement of a new display involving the combined armed forces.

The simulated battle on the beach will involve all forces personnel and will feature special effects from the team responsible for the film 'Saving Private Ryan.'

The joint operation by the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force will include a large twin-rotor Chinook helicopter, Hercules, Harriers and Tornado aircraft.

Lord Fearn, Sefton's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, said: "This display was first seen in Southport last year and visitors who were enthralled with the display will be lucky enough to see it again. Southport Air Show is getting bigger every year and this high profile mock battle is a real attraction."

Southport Air Show, the biggest aviation event in the North West, is on September 6th and 7th at the resort's seafront and attracts more than 200,000 people every year.

The assault on the beach takes place on both days and sees the RAF landing troops on the beach from a giant Chinook helicopter who will clear the 'enemy airfield' for a drop on the beach from a Hercules by the RAF Falcon parachute display team.

Meanwhile the Army with infantry and artillery backed up with Challenger Tanks will resist the attacks while the four Harriers will attack from the air. The RAF Tornado will conclude the display.

In addition the ever-popular Red Arrows will make a welcome return to Southport having missed last year due to commitments in Canada. The legendary air display team will open the main flying programme on the Saturday at noon and will also appear during the show the following day.

This year there will also be extensive ground entertainment for all ages with interactive and commercial trade stands, the Rock FM central arena and related features, army bands, large screens, static aircraft displays, military vehicles and numerous interactive military displays. Catering and bar facilities are also available.

For the first time, visitors will also be able to take advantage of the many attractions at Ocean Plaza including the new bowling alley, seven-screen cinema and a wide range of restaurants and shops.

All aircraft are subject to operational commitments. For further information visit HERE, telephone (01704) 233710 or (01704) 533333.
