From the Evening News, August 28, 1903: THOSE who have watched with painful interest the progress of tramway laying in Bolton - and possibly other towns - will welcome the news that there has just been introduced on to the works in connection with the construction of the Darlington tramways, a new labour-saving contrivance.

It mixes the concrete, and is said to so facilitate work as to save from 50 to 70 per cent in labour.

The machine is adapted to run on the rails after they have been fixed to gauge, and the concrete is deposited directly in the trench.

In each journey of 40 or 50 yards, about two cubic yards of concrete are mixed. During the short test to which it has already been subjected, the mixer has concreted a pair of rails 45 feet in length within the hour.
