RESIDENTS are angry that a decision has not been made whether a rat run barrier should stay in place permanently.

Consultations over the traffic measures on Seymour Road, Astley Bridge, are still taking place even though it was originally erected in August last year as part of a six month trial.

The barriers were put up to stop cars taking a shortcut from Crompton Way on to Blackburn Road.

Many residents are pleased with the barriers, but are annoyed it is taking so long to decide whether to make them a permanent fixture.

Resident Brian Dewsbury, aged 68, who lives on Ventnor Avenue, but whose drive backs on to Seymour Road, said: "I'm quite happy with the way things are. It has got to be a decision made by the majority and most people living directly near to it are quite happy."

Cllr John Walsh, of Astley Bridge, said: "The road was closed on a temporary basis but the debate has not yet been concluded about whether the barriers should stay in place.

"Most people seem to agree with the closure."

Astley Bridge councillor Hilary Fairclough has been speaking to residents after receiving many complaints about the length of time it is taking to reach a decision.

She said: "The residents have had to wait a long time already and a decision still doesn't look imminent. I have asked at planning meetings and it is very frustrating. I can't think of many things that have taken as long as this has to be sorted out."

Some residents are also still against the barrier remaining.

Frank Middleton, aged 77, of Seymour Road, said: "A couple of speed bumps was all that were needed to slow traffic down instead of all this fuss."

A council spokesman said: "There is still consultation ongoing with residents on the whole of Seymour Road. We had one resident ring yesterday to say they wanted the barrier moving to a different place. The original order was made for 18 months so we are still reviewing the situation."
