A POLICE pursuit across two counties ended near Westhoughton when a motorhome was abandoned on the M61 hard shoulder.

The pursuit followed reports that a Ford Transit motor caravan had been taken from the Tarleton area, near Preston, at 5.40pm last night.

The owner called the police and gave them directions as he pursued the vehicle in a car.

He lost sight of the motor caravan near Croston, but Lancashire Police patrol cars saw it being driven southbound along the M61 near junction eight.

The police force helicopter also joined in the pursuit.

The motor caravan eventually stopped on the hard shoulder between junctions five and six and rolled down an embankment into a field. A man was arrested nearby.

The man was taken to Leyland Police Station for questioning and was charged with aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

Wayne Scott Dean, aged 26, of Central Drive, Walkden, was bailed to appear before Chorley magistrates on September 3.
