The victim was found lying at the rear of a semi-detached bungalow in Rostron Road, Ramsbottom, at 9pm on Friday.
He was taken to Fairfield General Hospital, Bury, where he underwent surgery, but he died in the early hours of Saturday.
Mrs Linda De Ruijter, of Earl Road, Ramsbottom, said: "I heard a man shouting 'Help me, help me', and another voice said words to the effect of 'You won't do that again'. It was horrible and very disturbing."

They have now launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A police spokesman said: "The victim has not yet been formally identified and his next of kin have not yet been informed."
