From the Evening News, August 23, 1903: A FRESH massacre of 200 Bulgarians by the Turks near Monastir is reported from that town.

The latest accounts of the butchery at Krushevo are conflicting, the number of victims being placed at 300 by one account, and forty-four by another.

Turkey is mobilising its reserves in the village of Monastir, whence came further reports of massacre, outrage and pillage.

The insurgents have compelled the Turks to mass their troops in this vilayet, leaving the way clear for a rising in Macedonia.

GREATER Manchester's claim to the 2000 Olympic Games received a massive shot in the arm - the weekend the world dropped in on Bolton. The warmth of Bolton's resounding welcome for the World Triathlon Championships had the Bid Committee, international Olympic visitors, and the International Triathlon Union all drooling.

But after the partying was over, it was the cold that 1,400 athletes from all over the globe will remember most. Ten ended up in Bolton Royal Infirmary with hypothermia, and many more were treated by St John Ambulance. But all quickly recovered.

PROPOSALS to close Burton's clothing factory at Halliwell, Bolton, have been made by the company. This could mean that about 600 people will lose their jobs by the end of the year.

INSTEAD of "putting the boot in" at Burnden Park, young football hooligans will soon find themselves spending Saturday afternoons at a juvenile attendance centre in Bolton. The centre, to be based at Bolton Lads' Club, Bark Street, was welcomed today by Mrs Betty Vause, chairman of Bolton magistrates and chairman of the juvenile panel. She said that although the offenders would be disciplined, the idea was to "pull them up before they sink too far into the criminal scene."

THE big kick-off is of interest to all football fans, for it means that once more they can keep their tryst each Saturday throughout the football season with the club of their choice.

But for 1,000 or so Bolton boys the big kick-off is something much more important, for they themselves will soon be taking part in the opening of the 1953-54 season. They are members of teams in the Bolton Boys' Federation.

It was 30 years ago that two public-spirited Bolton citizens, Mr Roylance and Mr Britton, founded the Federation, with the idea of keeping the youth of the town off the streets. Since then the organization which they created has become an important part in the lives of many Bolton boys.
