THE Cinderella committee in connection with the Bolton and District Clarion CC took the usual contingent of 100 poor children for a day's outing to Rivington on Wednesday. A special car conveyed the party to Horwich, and then the walk to Rivington brought dinner-time, when meat pies, milk and buttered buns were done justice to. The day was then spent in football and cricket, whilst the girls had games of skipping, etc. After tea, nuts, sweets, etc. were distributed to everyone, and toys, balls, bats, etc. were competed for.

Mrs Henry Harwood, of Rivington, kindly had the children conveyed from Rivington to the car terminus at Horwich in wagonettes.

From the Evening News, August 6, 1953:

SEVEN swimmers were today trying to swim the English Channel. Twenty-two-years-old Kathleen Mayoh, of Farnworth, had already been in the water over seven hours, having started from St Margaret's Bay, near Dover, when the other six - two women and four men - waded into the seas, line abreast, off Cap Gris Nez, France, at 5.42am today.

When only three-quarters of a mile from the French shore, Kathleen Mayoh was taken from the water at 3.23pm after swimming for 17 hours and 28 minutes. She could not defeat the strong tides that had frustrated her for the past five hours.

From the Evening News, August 6, 1978:

HOW would you like to get away from it all and yet not go very far? Would five days, relaxing on the banks of the River Croal, sipping the local brew and tantalising your taste buds with black pudding be your ideal holiday?

If it does, you could be on a winner with Warrington brewery Greenall Whitley which has launched a special five-day holiday package scheme to lure more visitors to Lancashire, using Bolton's Pack Horse Hotel as a base.

Today the scheme met with great enthusiasm from Boltonians who think their town is a great place to spend a holiday.

From the Evening News, August 6, 1993:

HOOLIGANS smashed a car and brought traffic to a halt as anger erupted between rival gangs in Bolton last night. Around 100 youths became involved in a heated running argument on busy Blackburn Road at around 9pm. One frightened shopkeeper told how she saw white and Asian youths taunting each other across her car and then hitting the vehicle with sticks. The thugs then headed off along Blackburn Road throwing milk bottles.

When police arrived most of the crowd fled, but three youths were arrested and charged with affray.
