A MAN was found guilty of careless driving after he was involved in an accident which injured a mother and her 12-year-old daughter.

Duncan Spencer Smith, aged 28, of Radcliffe Road, Bury, was found guilty in his absence at Rochdale magistrates court yesterday and was fined £350 with £150 trial costs. Eight penalty points were also added to his licence.

Yvonne Tunnicliffe, prosecuting, said Smith had driven his van without due care and attention at the roundabout at the junction of Coronation Avenue and Middleton Road in Heywood.

He hit the vehicle of hotel worker and mother-of-two Mrs Lorraine Aldred, of Newhouse Road, Hopwood, Heywood.

A witness driving along the road at the time said Smith had been driving fast and erratically up to the roundabout and that it had been a case of "an accident waiting to happen".

There had been a screech of brakes and smoke from the wheels of Smith's vehicle entering the junction.
