From the Evening News, May 28, 1903: GEO. Allen, a noted vegetarian walker of 33 summers, passed through Bolton shortly before three o'clock this afternoon, and through Farnworth at 3.30.

He has done some remarkable feats; and he lately published a book on diet, open air living, and how to become strong for feats of endurance.

He is walking between Glasgow and London by a devious course, and his journey will be about 1,000 miles. In the evenings he delivers lectures on the value of living on food which has not had a sentient existence - what may be called strictly vegetarianism. He was only due in Bolton on Saturday, so that, to arrive two days in advance, he must have altered his plans.

PLANS to charge vehicles for every mile they travel along Britain's motorways and major A-roads have been greeted with disbelief and dismay by local road hauliers.

The immediate reaction to the Government plans for electronic tolling, by the Road Haulage Association, was: "This is horrendous."

The AA said that Britain's motorists have already paid "four times over" to improve the country's crumbling road network. And it warned that if motorway charging is introduced, the nation's motorists will demand a total review of motoring taxes, with a reduction of vehicle excise duty.

FOR the first time since VJ-Day, people throughout Bolton will celebrate an event of national rejoicing by means of that favourite method of mass-jollification, the street party.

All over Bolton, plans have been laid by the inhabitants of different streets to give the children, and in many cases themselves, a "reet good do" to remember the Coronation by.

Many of these parties will be held on Coronation Day itself, others are having them both before and after the great event.
