From the Evening News, May 26, 1903: THE country, the Empire, is in imminent peril. The house of Lords is filled with the spirit of revolt; there is talk of a strike.

Before their Lordships embark upon so perilous an adventure, let us hope the Lord Chancellor will fully explain to them the effect of recent decisions on picketing and other instruments affected by the law of conspiracy.

What a calamity if the Peers struck, and their places were taken by others! Or better still, if the country closed the establishment altogether as being useless and not a paying concern!

All this dust, it seems, is being kicked up because the Peers cannot leave London to go duck shooting while the Commons persists in sitting.

A BOLTON reservoir may be drained to become a private estate of more than 200 houses.

North West Water's properties Division has submitted an outline application to drain Sweetloves Reservoir, just off the west side of Belmont Road, Sharples.

The plan is to remove the huge banking overlooking the Oldhams Estate, carry out extensive earthworks to alter the shape of the land, and build up to 208 houses.

The reservoir, once a vital part of the supply system to lower lying areas of Bolton, is now "surplus to requirements".

HANDS off our flagpole! That's the message to Bolton Council from war veterans in Kearsley.

A cost cutting plan to transfer the flagpole from the former Kearsley town hall roof to one at Farnworth, has enraged the locals. A spokesman for Kearsley British Legion said: This flagpole is right next to the war memorial in Kearsley, and forms an integral part of our Remembrance Day service."

FOR the first time in the history of Bolton Parish Church, the choir sang from the top of the church tower on Saturday. The music was relayed through loud-speakers, and not only could the singing be heard by shoppers in the town centre, but also by people in their homes nearby. On Coronation Day, the choir will again sing from the top of the tower.

After the singing, a procession made its way to the Canon Slade sports ground on Bromwich-st., where the crowning of the rose queen, Sandra Cloynes, took place.
