From the Evening News, May 23, 1903: MR Edwin Haslam, auctioneer, The Albany, Mawdsley-st., on Wednesday conducted the first day's sale at the residence of the late Mr Robert Lawson, Fairfield House, off Mill-st., a noted connoisseur in works of art, china, etc.

Mr Lawson's picture gallery had more than a local fame, some of the paintings being from the studio of some of the greatest of ancient and modern masters.

The sale is being conducted in a large marquee in the grounds. Amongst the glass submitted was a suite of fine Venetian table glass, consisting of 229 pieces, which realised £47 10s. The antique and modern china and porcelain numbered over 120 lots, and all of them fetched good prices.

Today's sale includes books, jewellery, silver and electro-plate, and a number of pictures, though some of the more valuable works of art have been removed for sale at Christie's, London.
