Exhibitions

Never Again: A Memorial exhibition to honour the children involved in the organ retention scandal throughout the UK

This ground-breaking exhibition will focus on and around the issues involved with organ retention.

After the death of her son William, Denise Green then had to endure the fact her son was a victim of the organ retention scandal. She has had first hand experience of the effects of this both personally and on the family as a whole.

Denise has since become a highly respected individual within the organ retention campaign. Her determination and sympathetic approach have made her an inclusive spokeswoman for the families involved. This project will enable Denise's artistic representation of the events surrounding her son's death to be exhibited to a wider audience.

At the request of Denise, fellow artists Val Thompson and Pam Padmore have become involved with the exhibition and they have worked on the themes of memorials, grief and political issues such as the lack of informed consent. This has been achieved through both individual and collaborative pieces of work.

The centre-piece of the exhibition will be free standing Memorial Gates of Justice, designed by Denise. This is an interactive piece with which the public can engage by attaching flowers, a toy or other items of a personal significance, as a spontaneous memorial in memory of their child or loved ones. Surrounding the gates will be a display of images and objects made by families during memorial workshops held at Bolton and Manchester Art Galleries for those involved in the organ retention. Runs until June 14.

My Family Tree

Thursday, May 29, 10.30am-3pm

This exciting workshop encourages all ages to create a 3D family tree or a semi-circular ancestry chart that can be coloured, decorated and taken home, to be framed. Feel free to bring in family photographs that can be cropped and added to your tree on the day.

Drop In and Meet the Artists

Saturday, June 7, 10.30am-3pm

Denise, Val and Pam are available in the main Gallery to meet and talk about their work in an informal setting. This day gives members of the public a chance to ask questions about the issues covered throughout the six-week exhibition.

Three Halves

Three artists explore the history of the cotton trade from the perspective of their home towns.

Mumbai - a major port and industrial city, prominent in the cotton industry within India.

Liverpool - the port through whch raw materials were transported.

Bolton - a key mill town during the cotton era.

The resulting exhibition explores Ghandi's historic visit to the north west to speak to Lancashire mill workers and takes a critical look at history, the relationship between trade and politics and the direct impact on the lives of people. Runs until June 14.

Bolton Aquarium

There are fantastic fish on display from all over the world, some highly threatened in their natural habitats. From Piranhas to Pufferfish, huge Catfish to tiny Tetras, there are hundreds of fish to come and see in an aquarium designed to allow the fish to behave as they would in the wild. There is now the unique chance to name our new Lungfish from Queensland, Australia, which will be on display in the very near future.
